2nd TUESDAY LUNCH (POTLUCK)
Starting a New Business OR Going Back to Work - Oct. 11, 2011
In these economic times, everyone can use more money, but it can be daunting to contemplate going back to work or starting your own business in order to get it. Our speakers at this program told us about a variety of programs that are available to help with either finding work with an employer, or setting up one's own business:
- Leonard Weingarten from the Small Business Development Center
Funded in part by the Small Business Administration, the focus of the SBDC is economic development and to be a resource for current and future small business owners. The SBDC offers free, confidential counseling, low cost services and partial scholarships in areas such as business planning, loans and capital acquisition, marketing, taxes and bookkeeping. 51% of their clients are women. Approachable, friendly and professional, Mr. Weingarten gave many examples of the comprehensive services that the SBDC provides. Business owners (or prospective owners) can talk with a personal business counselor and/or take modestly priced seminars and workshops. While based in Santa Rosa, they have convenient satellite offices in southern Marin.
- Nancy Richardson from YWCA 50+ Employment Support Program for Women
This free service provides job preparation and employment education programs for Marin County women age 50 and over. They have just opened a computer training center, and are looking to help support women who are looking for work.
